Psychology

For majors or potential majors in the Department of Psychology interested in participating in the 2018 Summer Research Institute at Barnard with a Barnard faculty member, an independent mentor-mentee relationship must be established before signing up for SRI. Your mentor will be the one who contacts SRI on your behalf to register you for the program. Once you have contacted and obtained an explicit agreement for summer interning with one of the faculty below, your faculty mentor must email Professor McCrink (kmccrink@barnard.edu) with your name, year, email, your major or expected major, and whether or not they have external funding for your stipend at their disposal. After this process, you will be notified when the application for housing opens up, usually in mid- or late-April.

For majors or potential majors in the Department of Psychology interested in participating in the 2018 Summer Research Institute at Barnard with an off-campus faculty member at another institution, an independent mentor-mentee relationship must be established before signing up for SRI, and you must also secure an on-campus mentor who can coordinate your participation in the Barnard SRI. Even though your meaningful mentorship will occur off-campus, you still need an on-campus Barnard faculty mentor. Your Barnard college mentor will be the one who contacts SRI on your behalf to register you for the program. Once you have contacted and obtained an explicit agreement for summer interning with both your off-campus and Barnard faculty mentor, your Barnard faculty mentor must email Professor McCrink (kmccrink@barnard.edu) with your name, year, email, your major or expected major, and whether or not they have external funding for your stipend at their disposal. After this process, you will be notified when the application for housing opens up, usually in mid- or late-April.

To see a list of Barnard Psychology faculty, and their contact information, go to: https://psychology.barnard.edu/faculty-staff. You should click on their name to pull up information on their research focus, and consider whether it matches yours before emailing them to discuss a position in their laboratory.

Sources of support available to Psychology students include SURF, Con Edison, Barnard Office of Career Development and individual research grants.

Please note, the SRI itself does not provide stipend support. Instead, it provides subsidized Barnard housing and access to a program of lectures and workshops throughout the summer. You must independently obtain stipend support for your project to participate in SRI; it must be at least $4,000 for the duration of the SRI. You should (a) ask your mentor whether s/he could provide you with stipend support, and/or (b) apply to one of the funding organizations listed above for stipend support. If you obtain stipend support, then please indicate this information to your mentor. If you do not obtain stipend support, then the Psychology program may be able to obtain support through the Provost's office. Students themselves do not apply for Provost support; any Provost funds are allocated to, and arranged for, the departments who mentor these students.
